A protected coral reef sanctuary declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1979, sitting just 100 meters from shore. Creators report lionfish, pufferfish, giant moray eels, parrotfish, turtles, blacktip reef sharks, and even octopus and stonefish in the snorkeling zone.

Hikkaduwa is one of the few places in Sri Lanka where sea turtles still come ashore to lay eggs, and hatchlings can be seen making their way to the ocean right on the beach. Multiple creators document up-close turtle feeding and natural hatching events.

The southern section of Hikkaduwa's 7+ km beach, known locally as Narigama, is the lively surf and nightlife hub with surf shops, cafés, and a more relaxed vibe. Creators note it is family-friendly and swimmable year-round.

An authentic early-morning local fish market in the Dodanduwa area just south of Hikkaduwa town. Merete recommends arriving in the early morning when the streets are quieter and the trade is in full swing.

The Rathgama Lagoon in Dodanduwa offers a tranquil nature escape facing the lagoon, with unique scenery away from the busy beach strip. Travel With Husband describes the area as delivering a fascinating and luxurious experience.

A small, authentic local shop off the tourist strip serves vade (spiced donut-like snacks dipped in green sambal), hoppers, egg-hoppers, and other snacks. Merete calls vade her personal favourite Hikkaduwa street food.

The main Galle Road corridor running through Hikkaduwa from the northern Coral Beach down to Narigama south is lined with surf shops, local cafés, tuk-tuks, and colourful street life — a ride along it is itself a local experience recommended by Merete.

The UNESCO-listed colonial fort city of Galle is the most-cited day trip from Hikkaduwa, covered by multiple creators for its historic streets, night atmosphere, and ice cream walks inside the fort walls. Family Adventure Channel reached it by local train from Hikkaduwa.

A family water park reachable in about 1.5 hours from Hikkaduwa, recommended by Merete as a fun break from beach and nature activities — particularly popular with young children.

Merete rates Udawalawe as the best place in Sri Lanka to see wild elephants up close, with herds plus foxes, peacocks, crocodiles, water buffalo, and birds also sighted on safari. It is promoted as a day-trip extension from the south coast.
